Part of the Canarreos Archipelago, this islet covers an area of 37.5 km². Its narrowest section is only 1 km and the widest is 6.5 km.
In the southwestern region of Cuba, in the middle of the Caribbean Sea; 177 km from Havana and Varadero, 125 from Cienfuegos and 135 from Nueva Gerona (Isle of Youth).
The key has an international airport that can be reached from anywhere in the world, with daily domestic flights to and from Havana. The key also has a marina offering immigration, customs and on-board services.
Its climate is tropical moderate, with a mean temperature of 27ºC (80.6ºF) - 25.4ºC (77.7ºF) in the winter and 28ºC (82.4ºF) in the summer. Rainfalls are scarce, with prevalence of the easterly winds.
Stretching along 24 km, its calm blue waters gently kiss the sloping sand dune which is always cool, despite the intense solar radiation. Ideal for outdoor recreation activities and for engaging in nautical sports, especially diving!
Coastal vegetation with predominance of: jack beans (Caesalpinia bonduc), purslane (Sesuvium portulacastrum), Chilean firebush (Embothrium coccineum), coco plum trees (Chrysobalanus icaco), bay cedar (Suriana maritima), Florida thatch palms (Thrinax radiata) and other tropical coastal shrubbery. Climbing plants, sage and mangrove both adorn and protect the old dunes.
Multiple species including pelicans, sea gulls, iguanas, turtles, cormorants, kingbirds, mockingbirds, hummingbirds and herons.
